Etiquette

ETIQUETTE AND GUIDANCE

Behaviour on the lawns is covered by Rule 16 of the Croquet Association's Rules. In particular and sometimes additionally:

  • You should not move (or let your shadow move) in front of a player who is about to play a stroke. More generally you should not move towards your ball while an opponent is preparing to play a stroke nor 'hover' over your ball while your opponent is playing.
  • You should play with 'reasonable dispatch'. This is defined in the CA Rules as not taking longer than one minute to play your stroke.
  • You should never walk across a lawn while a game is in progress.
  • You should not smoke (or vape) on the lawns or in the clubhouse.
  • You should not take mobiles onto the lawns.
  • You should take your share before Social Play in setting up the lawns (and when necessary putting the boards in place).
  • Similarly you should help to clear the lawns and do the washing-up at the end of the day's play.
  • You are expected to wear appropriate shoes and clothing at all times. This should be white when playing in external league matches and the finals of internal and tournament matches.
  • You are expected to take part in the internal Club tournaments.
  • If you introduce new players you should be responsible for helping them to feel welcome by introducing them to other players and helping them to understand the basics of the game.
  • You should be aware that there are two padlocks – one for the gate and one for the clubhouse. Do not reveal the codes to non-Members and if you are locking up, be sure to use the correct padlock on the gate: mowing contractors know the code for this one, but not for the clubhouse padlock.
  • Without special permission no Member or guest is permitted to bring any animal onto Club premises.
  • GUESTS: are required to pay a ‘green fee’. You should ensure that all guests are signed into the visitors’ book and that the green fee is paid. If they are bona fide potential Members they can play without charge on their first three visits.
  • No Member may introduce more than three guests in any one day and no one shall be permitted as guest of the Club on more than five occasions in one year.
  • On application to the Committee a Member of six months standing may introduce to the Club on a special occasion an unrestricted number of guests.
