Des said he'd ordered the weather and the players were spoilt with an absolutely beautiful sunny, blue sky day certainly the warmest so far in 2026.

The players, notably including John GD, trooped out willingly onto the lush lawns and played their February Frolics in swift succession. There was a wonderful buzz and plenty of laughing as the teams sped around the lawns.
The courts were certainly picking up speed rapidly in the strong sun.

Around 11am, the striptease started with Sir Colin leading by daringly exposing his wrist to elbow to the warm rays. Others daringly followed by casting aside scarves and bobble hats.

After three stiff rounds the bell rang for lunch and everyone gratefully rambled in the direction of the JG Clubhouse which was emitting delicious aromas of a fine selection of stews:
Tuscan Sausage Casserole, Chicken Marbella, Pork and Cider Stew and Coq Au Vin.
The casseroles braced themselves for the onslaught but found themselves unable to hold their ground against the hungry foe. Janet Arscott had generously donated some bottles of red wine and they also put up weak resistance to the attack from the tables.
As if all that wasn't enough. Brenda's infamously tasty apple pie and Rachael's outsized Lemon Cream Pie also succumbed to complete annihilation.

At Lunchtime John GD was leading with three games, just ahead of Jane on hoop difference.

Remarkably, the players made a rapid recovery from the feast and were keen to complete the last two games.

Jane battled it out to the end and won all five games, just beating Kevin and John GD.

Thanks to everyone who cooked, played, washed-up and helped to make it a memorable day.

Bring on Mad March Hares

Hoop Coop

The Hoop Coop has had a deluxe upgrade thanks to Trevor who has made storage for two sets of hoops and centre pegs.

The hoop markers are now stored on the wide steel band above the hoops (you can just see them in the picture)
He is working on matching hoop storage for the other side.
Once the second hoop rack is installed there will be no need for the remaining trolley.

Many, many thanks to Trevor.

January Japes Wednesday 28 January

January Japes was a resounding success yesterday. As usual warm weather with plenty of sunshine.

Jane with her consummate skills coordinated everything.

Twenty three of us enjoyed the sit down hot lunch made by many volunteers.

Putting out hoops, laying tables, washing and drying up was done with enthusiasm as was sweeping the floor at the end.

Who won? Well great croquet was played with many games battling it out at the Golden Hoop. Spirits were high, Alex, Anne, Jane and Trevor were all in contention and it came down to the final round.

Anne and Jane both won their matches so it came down to hoops conceded making Jane the winner.

Well done Jane, commiserations to Anne. The next fun day may be in February, for Anne this may be a case of third time lucky.

Each with 5/5 wins but Colin's hoop difference was superior.

Penny organised the games, kept the scores and presented Colin with his Magnum of Prosecco.

Top Dressing Court 3 Monday 6 October

A beautiful sunny Autumnal day saw 10 members turning up to Top Dress C3. Many hands made light work (relatively) and the job was finished by 12:30.

Many, many thanks to all.

After 2 very large bags of black Top Dressing were added and levelled by hand and machine, the Top Dressing could hardly be seen.

Longman Cup Semi Final

Our AC handicap team of Alex, Nick, David and Jerome had a good run in reaching the semi final of the Longman Cup by soundly beating Ashby, scoring a remarkable 7-0.

In the semi finals they played Southport who generously agreed to waive their right to hold the fixture on their home lawns in view of the distance from Newport.

Edgbaston kindly hosted the fixture.

The game was tightly contested. A 3-0 deficit in the morning was too much to come back from and with wins from Alex and Jerome, we ended up losing 5-2.

Well played Southport and hope you show Hurlingham how it's done!

Hedge Trimming - Friday 5 September
10 members turned up and did a great job trimming the Leylandi and generally tidying up the borders.

Well done all.

August Antics
Trevor receiving his winners bottle of Prosecco from Des
NCCs first fun day for a while, August Antics, got off to a flying start under sunny blue skies with 16 players battling it out in five games of rotating doubles.

By lunchtime there were two players winning all their matches, Trevor and Des.

After a gargantuan buffet lunch which included: some delicious salads and Bishop's coleslaw, Shirley's infamous sausage rolls, Penny's tomato salad and Glenys' star rated crustless quiche, play restarted at two under threatening skies.

At close of play five players vied for first position, Trevor, Des , John Hall, Paula and Rory.

On games won, 5 out of 5 won, Trevor came first and carried off the bottle of Prosecco.

Congratulations Trevor and well done to everyone else who came to enjoy the day.
